About Obstacle Course Racing

Obstacle Course Racing (OCR) is a is an up and coming sport in which you must overcome various physical challenges in the form of obstacles while navigating muddy, hilly, and unknown terrain. Obstacles include, but are not limited to, climbing over walls, carrying heavy objects, traversing bodies of water, crawling under barbed wire, and jumping through fire. Obstacle racing tests your endurance, strength, speed, dexterity, and mental determination. Races vary in both distance and challenge level, combining trail running, road running, and cross country running.

Common Races

  • Spartan Races: This organization offers 3 course levels that vary in distance and number of obstacles.  Visit www.spartanrace.com for more details!
    • Sprint, 3-5 mile course
    • Super, 8-10 mile course
    • Beast, 10-20 mile course
  • Tough Mudder: This organization only offers 1 level of course, ranging from 8 to 15 miles.
  • Countless Others, including:  Adventure 5K, Warrior Dash

OCR Training at Pure Life Fitness

At Pure Life Fitness we offer lots of ways to train for an upcoming OCR or any other kind of endurance event (5k, 10k, half/full marathon, etc.).  Our Group Classes prepare your body by increasing your strength and endurance, while also giving you the opportunity to try many of the obstacles on site!

  • Rope climb
  • Tire pull
  • Bucket Carry
  • Low Crawls (for barbed wire crawls)
  • Tall Walls

During the spring and summer, organized group hikes and trail runs are offered locally at Monadnock Mountain (Jaffrey), Watatic Mountain (Ashby, MA), Beaver Brook trails (Hollis, NH), and Silver Lake trails (Hollis, NH).  These are offered on Sunday’s and before/after scheduled group classes.  Check out our weekly newsletter or Facebook page for current information!
